This month of August, renewables generated 14.8% more than in the same month of 2022, recording 10,965 GWh, which has represented a share of 46.4% of the total, according to data shared by Red Eléctrica (REE). In the first eight months of 2023, renewable production has grown by 13.8% compared to the same period of the previous year.

This August, solar photovoltaic has recorded a production of 4,389 GWh, 35.3% more than in the same period of the previous year. In the generation structure, it accounted for 18.6%, being for the third consecutive month the leading source of renewable generation in our country.

Wind generation in August was 4,325 GWh and accounted for 18.3% of the total production, remaining in the computation of the year as the first technology in the mix with a share of 22.3%.

Hydraulics produced 9.6% more in August than in the same month of 2022 and recorded 1,065 GWh, reaching a share of 4.5% of the total in our country.

Renewables as a whole generated 48% of the peninsular total in the month; while in the islands the combined cycle leads, with 63.8% in the Balearic Islands and 39.4% in the Canary Islands. In addition, in the Balearic Islands, during this month, the submarine link between the Peninsula and Majorca contributed to cover 24.6% of the Balearic electricity demand.

In the Canary Islands, for its part, renewables and emission-free technologies represented 26.8% of production, and the contribution of wind power was 22.3%.

Demand falls 1.3% in August

National electricity demand experienced a decrease of 1.3% in August compared to the same month of the previous year, once the effects of temperature and work schedule were discounted. In gross terms, a demand of 21,765 GWh is estimated, 1.1% lower than that of August 2022.

In the peninsular electricity system, the demand in August was 1.4% lower than in August 2022, taking into account the effects of working hours and temperatures. In gross terms, a demand of 20,199 GWh has been registered, 1.4% less than in the same month of 2022.

In August, in the Balearic Islands, electricity demand fell by 5.5% once the effects of work and temperatures were taken into account. In gross terms, monthly demand is estimated at 708,974 MWh, 2.7% lower than that registered in August 2022. In the first eight months of 2023, Balearic gross demand is estimated at 4,144,809 MWh, 1. 8% less than in the same period of the previous year.

For its part, in the Canary archipelago, the demand for electrical energy, once work schedules and temperatures are taken into account, has increased by 6.2% compared to the same month of the previous year. In gross terms, demand has stood at 816,547 MWh, 7.8% higher. In the accumulated year of 2023, the gross demand of the Canary Islands is estimated at 5,748,620 MWh, 1.7% more than in the same period of 2022.
